The Creamery
Spaces
Office | 1 space available | 150 SqFt - 1,850 SqFt
Building description
The Maple Island Farms Creamery, located at 150 West First Street, was constructed in 1944 to utilize the milk produced by the numerous dairy farms in the surrounding area. The brick Art Moderne-style building included a large, non-extant brick smokestack and replaced the smaller, non-extant Aune Cheese Factory on the same site. The creamery lasted for only ten years and went out of business. The building sat largely vacant until 1980, when it was renovated by TDS properties to contain several offices and small businesses, including the offices of the Friday Canning Company. The extensive renovation project cost approximately $750,000 and was completed by the Derrick Construction Company. The building was remodeled again in 1998.
In 2016, Sunbow Propertiers purchased the building and renovated the 2nd floor and portions of the 1st floor. Installed a new passenger elevator and sprinkler system throughout the entire building. The building features multiple office spaces with their own unique styles. Leaving the old brick and clay-tile exposed in areas, as well as using the original red quarry tile for the first floor's flooring, preserves the historic aspect and keeps it part of the building's history.
This 3-story mall has been recently redone. The windows are new, and about 1/3 of the South side of the building is no longer there, including a large smokestack. The remaining structure is the same shape. The exterior fabric is brick, and there are stone belt lines that read "Maple Island Farms." Window heads are stone. There are six horizontal brick belt lines on the side. This building is a good example of adaptive reuse. The facade is essentially the same as the original, although window alterations do detract from the original character and integrity of this building. It has no architectural significance.
