Building description
The Standard Oil Building is a six-story brick and limestone structure built in 1921 to serve as the Nebraska headquarters for the Standard Oil Company. Designed by architects John and Alan McDonald, it was crucial to the state's early automotive industry and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.
The site is conveniently located in the emerging Flatiron District, which offers many amenities within walking distance as well as convenient public transportation including the developing streetcar route.
The property boasts a high 93 walk score, 51 transit score and 72 bike score. In addition to the property's private parking lot, there is on-street metered parking available surrounding the building.
Building highlights
- It was originally constructed for the Standard Oil Company of Nebraska, which formed in 1906 and operated as a separate entity affiliated with the larger Standard Oil of Indiana.
- The "L" shaped structure was designed by noted Omaha architects John and Alan McDonald and was considered a premier office building.
- After serving as the Standard Oil Company of Nebraska headquarters from 1921, the building was purchased by the Standard Oil Company of Indiana in 1939.
- The property was later converted into offices, becoming widely known as the "Law Building".
- The building was renovated in 1978 and retained its 1920s aesthetic on the top floor. In 2020, plans were proposed for an $8M renovation to turn it into luxury micro-apartments known as "The Standard".
