HISTORY

Placerville Fruit House, now known as the Wilkerson-Hupcey building, has a long history dating back 100 years in the Placerville

community. It was the biggest industrial packing shed in the United States back in the 1940s and ’50s, and it was an employment

anchor for several decades — kids and adults alike knew you could always get a job at the Placerville Fruit Growers packing shed.

Southern Pacific Railroad would fill cars with fruit in downtown Placerville at the packing shed located where the Marshall Hospital lab

is today (the old Midtown Mall) on Main Street. The boxcars replaced earlier horse-drawn wagons, but it wouldn’t be too long before

the last train whistle blew as refrigerated trucks became the standard transportation mode.

Many of the local residents of Placerville (if you ask them) will tell you stories of how their grandparents and parents have worked in

the Placerville Fruit House packing fruits for the Placerville Fruit Growers Association.
