Location at the corner of Main and Commercial Streets and surrounded by the stunning architecture of the First National Bank building and Jaffa Opera House, the Columbian Hotel is a signature opportunity to bring back a centerpiece of a town rich with culture and creativity. Designed by John Conkie in 1879, the Grand Union Hotel was a stunning three-story brick landmark was renamed in honor of the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition to capture the excitement of the era. Sitting just blocks from the Fox West Theatre and across the street from the Jaffa Opera House, in its day it the Columbian offered travelers visiting the bustling town of 30,000 respite in one of their 100 rooms.
While the hotel closed for good in the 1970s, in 2018 preservationist Dana Crawford purchased the building with a vision of bring it back to it’s cultural prominence by creating an 18 to 20 suite condominium hotel for prospective retirees to invest in, stay with the option of entertaining visitors from all across the region when not in use. Later she explored a hotel concept that could offer some 40 rooms to suit the character of the building or be redesigned into apartments to meet the ever changing needs of the community.
Today the Columbian Hotel is as relevant to Trinidad as the Oxford Hotel, one of Dana’s earlier preservation projects, is to LoDo in downtown Denver.
