The atoll was officially declared a marine reserve on November 22, 2012 as it is home to more than 500 species of fish, 65 species of stony corals, sea turtles, manatees, dolphins, seabirds, and other wildlife. Large expanses of intact mangrove and seagrass habitat and shallows are home of a wide array of fish species, crocodiles, lobster, conch and other invertebrates. The salt-water lagoons and mangroves also provide primate habitat for a variety of species, including juvenile fish and breeding birds. The Turneffe Islands have one of the largest nesting areas in the Caribbean for American crocodiles, a threatened species.
