ABOUT THE REGION
The City of Mullens (pop. 1,475) is located in an area known for its mountain scenery. It nestles in the upper valley of the Guyandotte River, a forested region dotted by small towns and farms. Most communities here were established in the late 1800s when coal mining commenced on an industrial scale. By the late 1900s, the decline in mining employment led to an outmigration of many residents. While coal is still mined, Wyoming County, which includes Mullens as a principal city, has declined from roughly 37,000 in 1950 to just over 21,000 in 2020, though its population has since begun to increase. Remote work opportunities, the relative affordability of real estate, the growth of tourism, and the completion of expressways have conspired to attract many new residents.
Downtown Mullens Historic District
Bolstered by the completion of the Coalfields Expressway in 2020, Mullens is enjoying remarkable growth following a long period of relative decline. As a result of its status as a national historic district, financial support for construction and rehabilitation in the downtown is provided to property owners through grants, tax credits, and other funding programs.
The Coalfields Expressway
The newest leg of the Coalfields Expressway (WV-121) was completed to Mullens in 2020, significantly changing the region’s economic outlook. Retail, medical, and government centers in Beckley are now a 20-minute drive, and I-77 and I-64 are 18 miles away. As a result, Mullens and the region are growing as destinations for investment.
The Guyandotte River Water Trail
A significant draw to the area, this 120-mile water trail follows the Guyandotte from its source, near Mullens, through the region’s spectacular mountain landscape. Conveniently spaced for day trips, kayak access sites are being installed every six miles along the way. The trail is a one-minute walk from the property.
Hatfield-McCoy Trail System
More than 45,000 off-road vehicle enthusiasts annually tour the Hatfield-McCoy Trail network near Mullens, a chief driver of regional development. Officials with the trail authority, which oversees more than 1,500 miles of off-road routes, emphasize the need for private investors to develop more lodging and services for users.
Twin Falls Resort State Park
A state-managed vacation park renowned for its namesake waterfalls, Twin Falls attracts more than 40,000 visitors annually and includes a 47-guest-room lodge, a 50-site campground, and 14 cottages. An 18-hole golf course, 10 miles of biking trail, and more than 50 miles of hiking trail are principal park attractions. The park is 12 miles from Mullens.
The National Coal Heritage Area
Federally designated in 1996, the national heritage area was established to promote tourism, historic preservation, and economic development in a 13-county region that had long been a bituminous coal-producing region. Mullens is on the National Coal Heritage Trail, a National Scenic Byway that tours many historic landscapes along a 100-mile route.
TOURISM & RECREATION
The region around Mullens is now a chief destination for outdoor recreation in West Virginia. The primary draws are hiking, biking, hunting, paddling, and off-road motor touring. All-terrain vehicle trails help attract more than 45,000 vacationers annually. Three sections of the Hatfield-McCoys Trail System converge nearby—the Indian Ridge, Pocahontas, and Pinnacle Creek networks. The privately operated Burning Rock Off-Road Park is a 20-minute drive with more than 100 miles of trail.
Trout fishing has also become a draw, and the Guyandotte River has become a well-known paddling stream ideal for kayaking and canoeing. The New River Gorge National Park and Preserve, the newest national park in the U.S., is a 45-minute drive east of the property. Winterplace Ski Resort, a 45-minute drive, attracts more than a million skiers annually.
