The Cottonwood Fire of 2026 did burn through this property but it didn’t hurt the hunting chances. The canyons are long and run north and south through the property. The elk and deer are still seen on the property. Stock water is provided by an electric submersible well and tire tank. There is also an electric waterer for a winter water source for the wildlife. This well also pumps water to the cabin. There is 135 acres of non-irrigated cropland located in the northwestern portion of the property that is enrolled into NE Upland Wildlife USDA FSA CRP. The contract expires in October 2039 and pays $14,042 annually. The neighbor has been grazing the approximate 466 acres of fenced rangeland on the property during the summers and would like to continue that arrangement. This is an outstanding hunting and recreational property with an income stream to support the habit. The “Cabin” is a 40’x40’ Lester Steel building with lean-to on the west side overlooking the property. There are 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. It would sleep 6. There is a kitchen and garage. Water is pumped from the stock well to a storage tank in the cabin to service the on demand water heater. There is propane that services the stove and heaters. AC is provided by a mini-split system. The furnishings do sell with the property. Also included with the property is a 20’ shipping container for additional storage. Moorefield Hunters Getaway is located in the Box Elder Elk management area of the Nebraska Game and Parks. Elk herds once common across all of Nebraska became extinct by 1900. In the 1960s a few elk returned to Nebraska, and in 1986 Nebraska had its first modern elk season. Since then, elk and have expanded into hills and rivers of western Nebraska, and the annual passage of young bulls through eastern Nebraska is a common occurrence. More than 1,600 elk have been harvested since the first season in 1986. This hunting property is also home to mule deer and whitetail deer. Turkey and upland bird hunting and fur trapping is also available. For a complete guide to hunting in Nebraska check with the Nebraska Game and Parks, Outdoor Nebraska website. LOCATION: 5 miles north of Moorefield, NE at the end of Fletcher Road LEGAL DESCREPTION: All Section 8 - Township 9 North – Range 27 West of the 6th P.M., Lincoln County, Nebraska ACRES: 640+/- taxed acres but there may actually be more acres within the fenced boundary. TAXES: 2025 taxes payable in 2026 were $6,757 FSA CRP: The 135.10 acres of non-irrigated cropland is enrolled into the USDA FSA CRP SAFE - NE Upland Wildlife program. It pays $103.94 per acre ($14,042 total annually) and expires October 2039. LOESS CANYON REGION of NEBRASKA This unique ecosystem located south of the Platte River valley and southeast of North Platte is comprised of about 340,000 acres of silty soils, which long ago eroded into narrow gulches and steep canyons. These hills support mixed-grass prairie and scattered cropland. The mixed-grass prairies have been highly invaded by eastern red cedars in recent decades. Though the cedars have limited the grazing capacity of the rangeland they have created fantastic wildlife habitat for elk, mule deer, whitetail deer, turkey and many species of fur baring animals including coyote, bobcat and raccoon. Upland bird hunting including prairie chicken and grouse is also active in this region.
